Here’s how to set up your own home gym, step by step.

 

1. Define your ‘gym space’

It’s essential that your ‘home gym’ is somewhere you can escape from distractions and focus on your goals.

2. Flooring 

A very important aspect of your home gym is the flooring.  The right flooring can make your equipment last longer and reduce strain on your joints as you workout.

3. Wall lining/decorations

There are a few options available when lining your home gym.

Gyprock and extra insulation will make the room feel more comfortable as well as helping to absorb noise.

A great alternative to traditional gyprock is to use pre-painted lining boards. These systems are a fast, easy and inexpensive way to line your walls, and can be found at most hardware stores.

Once lined, here’s a few suggestions for decorating your walls:

  • motivational posters,
  • visual goal reminders
  • a workout schedule to keep yourself on track.

Mirrors along one wall are a great option if you want to keep an eye on your form – however make sure they are safely mounted to the wall, and positioned above the skirting for extra support.

4. Equipment 

Whether you already have some equipment, or you’re starting out, its best to consider what you are going to get the most use from.

Don’t bother buying that Ab Blaster 2000. Invest in sturdy, good quality machines that you will get alot of use from.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Treadmill – a great all-rounder, the treadmill can be used for walking, jogging, sprinting or use the incline settings to tone those calves.
  • Elliptical – great for toning, the elliptical ensures its more than just your leg muscles doing the work.
  • Exercise Bike – my personal favorite – the exercise bike is great for getting in a workout whilst keeping your hands free. Think of it as a productive way to check emails, or scroll through Instagram.
  • No Equipment – possibly the best and easiest to start with, you’d be surprised the work you can do purely with your own body weight. Tabata, pilates, yoga, dancing and kickboxing are all great workouts that can be done without any equipment.
